Deposition induced by evaporation

We investigate the deposit phenomena by a capillary rise. The velocity of contact line of the meniscus is controllably moved by a push/pull-syringe. Experiments have been performed with a colloidal suspension of silica particles (diameter = 80 nm) or with polymer solutions of PAAm using two different molar mass. The influence of the initial concentration, evaporation rate and contact line velocity are investigated in the domain of low Capillary numbers. Experimentally, we found a general scaling law for the mean thickness of the deposit. Theoretically, Qualitative regimes are proposed to understand the scaling law those are: evaporation dominates under low velocity; transient region of a plateau under much higher velocity than evaporation; and then Landau-Levitch film formation is expected beyond.
